In this five part series, the Rogues dig deep into some of the recent EJami episodes of Days of Our Lives. In the span of ten days, everything about the EJ and Sami story changed.

Part 2: EJ’s Happiness

The greatest thing for me about Sami’s confession and everything that came after it was how happy EJ appeared. Just like EJami fans, it was like every wish he had was coming true. He was relieved. He was vindicated. He wasn’t crazy after all, and neither were we. The look on his face when she confessed, spoke volumes. His body language was one big metaphorical exhale.

When he talked about how long he dreamed of holding each other, I was reminded of every moment he tried to make that happen and failed. I was reminded of the crazy fantasy he had on the pier in 2007 when he would go to such crazy lengths to have her be his. And I thought of when they made love in 2008 and she ran out on him when Lucas returned. The way he threw that pillow across the room. The moment ruined. And when she handed back her wedding ring and he got her to confess how she felt but she ran from him again. It was clear he couldn’t break down her walls. And I thought of when he went to Horton cabin to tell her he was having a baby with Nicole and he waited for her to say something, but she wouldn’t say what her face clearly revealed. Sami was devastated, but she wouldn’t stop him. She wouldn’t make him hers. I was reminded of 2010 and his three proposals and then of course the way he broke down after the failed wedding. I imagined his face as he crumbled onto that bed, realizing there would be no wedding night. And I was reminded of their time in the hideaway in 2012, when a familiar hope sparked. He wanted to have her all night long, but there was another interruption, as always.

It’s no wonder that, much like EJami fans, EJ has been cautious lately. His heart had been torn to shreds too many times. He wasn’t sure if he would ever get her lock, stock, and barrel. But he did. We did. And seeing him happy is one of the greatest rewards.

Now, he can be with her all night long.

He can publicly express his feelings for her, like he did in the pub.

He can steal her away whenever he likes and make her his, like he did against that wall.

She’s not going to run this time and as he finally breaks out of denial about it (us too), you can see the happiness, the gratitude, and the relief. They finally made it.

So my post yesterday was a little on the rough side, with some seriously bad language. (Apologies – kind of). I was thinking to myself, what are some other single sentences (or questions) I would write to Corday and Tomlin that aren’t quite as crass? Here are a few that I came up with:

Why does Rafe appeal to you?

Stop it.

Your stories suck.

Why not EJami?

How long can this go on?

A gunshot to the head couldn’t kill EJami, what’s your next trick?

Please give us EJami once and for all.

Samantha Gene. You are my favorite character, I am not ashamed to say. What are you up to girl? It seems to me that you are letting EJ back into your life  and I couldn’t be more thrilled. And not only that, you are being so good to him. You’re pulling him in.

This is new. Very new. I was never really caught up in the notion that Sami would have to be the one to want him, to encourage him, to pull him. I always liked how EJ did that. How he was helpless at the sight of her. But things have shifted, he’s changed, she’s changed, the situation has changed, and I’m loving it.

He’s obviously hardened after all these years of total disappointment, just like we have. He’s learned resistance, he lives it, he doesn’t think he wants to go there again. And yet you can see that exterior shell cracking each time she opens her door to him. She surprises him a lot these days. For years, she resisted the idea of even spending time with him properly. He’s always had to make the most of his time with her, but not anymore. She wants him to stay, to get comfortable, to talk to her. He doesn’t expect her to be there for him and it’s unclear that he knows what to do with that. It’s beginning to happen in the eyes, you can see it. She’s finally beginning to figure it out. That she needs him in her life, she needs him to be okay, that they are in it together. Why resist it, when accepting it feels right?

Sami says to EJ “I haven’t seen you like this in a long time,” and it only now occurs to me that they’ve been at this for a long time. Six years. Their history is overwhelming and yet I feel like we’re finally getting started. It’s the start of something, but I’m not sure what. Maybe it’s the start of their happy ending.

EJ sees Sami from across the square. She’s by herself, leaning against a railing. He turns to go, but then hesitates and leans back on his heels. We all know that he’s going to turn around. He always turns around. He can’t not turn around. And so he does and he approaches her. “Hey,” he says. Three little letters that make a sound so simple, a greeting, but we all know it carries the weight of the world.

Upon watching this minor teeny tiny scene play out the following conversation happens in my living room.

EJ: Hey.

[End scene on his eyes that say so much.]

The Architect: [high pitched breathy sounds, discernible only to small furry creatures]

The Architect’s Significant Other: Oh, come on!

The Architect: Whaaat?

Mr. Architect: All he did was say ‘hey’!

The Architect: I know, wasn’t that great?

Mr. Architect: So that’s all you EJamis need to get happy?

The Architect: Have you met us? It doesn’t take much.

Mr. Architect: So what’s so good about this?

The Architect: This, my dear, is how it begins.

Mr. Architect: But they hate each other.

The Architect: [Wild laughter] That’s how it always starts. It’s a thin line. With these two… there’s no middle ground.

[Mr. Architect shakes his head and a big old smile spreads across my face.]

So why the smile? It’s not just that EJ and Sami are in scenes again, or that they are getting to the root of their issues, but I think — for me — it’s because EJ turned around and went to speak to her. It reminded me of an EJ that I haven’t seen in a long time. I’ve always been team Sami, but I never fast forwarded EJ scenes until this last go-round with Nicole. This was different, familiar in a good way. So yeah – that’s why I’m smiling. What did you think?

I’d like to think that the phrase “love you till the end,” is totally appropriate for an EJami fan. We are so challenged as a fanbase. TPTB make it hard to stick with it and love our couple. Their characters don’t make it easy. These days, EJ is on my bad list. He has definitely lost some appeal in my eyes, but at the end of the day, I still believe and I still want to see EJami happen.

So lets find the happiness where we can and enjoy these fond memories we have. Will you love EJami until the end?

Here we are at the end of the year and our EJami story is even more complicated than it was a year ago. Progress? Probably not. More barriers to overcome? Yep. Some of us relish it in, others get fatigued, quite a few get angry.

That being said, we asked for a complicated tale, and we certainly got one.

We started with so little at the beginning of this year. Ken Corday was spouting how enchanted we’d be with EJ and Taylor. What a joke. Sami and EJ, upon making their truce, seemed oceans apart. Yawn. More Sami and Rafe. Whatever. EJ and Nicole version 4,028,209 equally forced and dull. But we got our moment, while not romantic or loving, it proved that these two are drawn together and that connection cannot be broken. It’s never forced or dull.

I’m hopeful that in 2012 we get progress. Since 2007 we’ve been predicting that the upcoming year will be our year, and I’m not going to do that this year. I’m just going to sit by and wait and wait and wait. I’ll enjoy my EJami friends and hope and wait some more.

I really like this video by kerenfr called “The Mess I Made.” While it may seem that their mess is insurmountable, it also reminds me that this is all soapy goodness.

Happy New Year EJami fans!

At the beginning of this year, when we read that EJ and Sami were going to have a truce for the sake of their children, I was relieved. Hooray! They would stop being at each other’s throats all the time. And then I let it sink in and read between the lines and the rest of the spoilers. EJ and Sami were moving on and away from each other’s orbits. My worst nightmare. It didn’t completely turn out like that, since EJ was meddling again in Sami’s life with Rafe 2.0. However, there wasn’t anything to make that enjoyable at all. Their connection was relatively put aside, EJ’s desires were all wrapped up in a manufactured romance with Taylor, and Sami busy hating on her terrible “husband,” and she wasn’t really present.

And then the double Rafe story got wrapped up, and we were really left with nothing. EJ gave up his kids and he was so very distracted once again.

Sigh.

This was a huge bummer for me and thus made 2011 one of EJami’s worst years, in my opinion. We learned quick, that even if it wasn’t the most romantic and happy story line for the pair, at least we had story. No EJami story = … well, you lived through it just like I did.

When we anxiously waited for the new writing regime to get started, I asked myself, what kind of EJami story would I want them to write. I took a first stab at our letter to the writers that we later published and sent to them. I know that I didn’t want an EJ and Sami that was tied up in a little bow. I didn’t want a crappy bandaid. In my opinion, they needed their own really raw reset.

I noticed right away with Marlene and Darrell at the helm that the EJami tone was changing. While EJ and Sami were certainly doing their own thing, they were still crossing paths, in a good way. What I never expected was for my wish to come true so quickly (in the grand scheme of things) and that we’d get the raw EJami reset that I was hoping for. Marlene and Darrell are giving EJami a starting point. One that is rough and hideous and dramatic. There is nothing sweet about these scenes we’re about to get, and I am certain that there will be regrets and disgust to follow soon after.

Call me desperate, but that is just fine with me. It’s a place to work from. There will be scenes and flashbacks and substance. There will be damage and heart ache. There will be SCENES. And when there are scenes, there is something to chew on, something to discuss and speculate about.

We often get criticized as EJami fans for being twisted and weird, and it’s probably odd that we’re find joy in some really hard scenes, but I just feel like we’ve got a thick skin. We’re committed to our couple and we’re excited to see James Scott and Alison Sweeney in scenes like this. It gets our blood flowing, it gets us loud and happy. What can I say, we’ve never had it easy.

Nothing is easy, everything is complicated. Welcome back EJami.
